Dr. Elena Sizikova earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oxford. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University, under the guidance of Professor Thomas Funkhouser. Dr. Sizikova was also a Moore Sloan Fellow at the Center for Data Science at New York University (NYU).

Dr. Sizikova became interested in data science when she began researching RNA algorithms during an undergraduate summer internship. Her interest in medical imaging was sparked during a research internship at Siemens Healthineers that she completed as a graduate student.

Current Role

Dr. Sizikova is a Staff Fellow at the Division of Imaging, Diagnostics and Software Reliability (DIDSR), Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She is interested in research at the intersection of AI, medical imaging, and computer vision. During a typical day, Dr. Sizikova works on regulatory science, mentors junior researchers, and writes papers or grants.

Career Advice

For data scientists who are early in their training, Dr. Sizikova recommends applying for different internships because it is a great way to get hands-on experience and discover roles that fit your interests. She also recommends attending conferences and local events to connect with as many professionals as possible and learn about different career paths.

For folks who are currently or will soon be applying for jobs, Dr. Sizikova recommends searching for curated jobs boards (like ADSA’s jobs board), joining mailing lists that share data science jobs (like the CDN Newsletter), and following social media accounts to learn about job opportunities (like ADSA’s Twitter account). She also recommends trying to stay up to date on cutting-edge research trends (e.g., via social media or conferences) and finding ways to identify where your own research goals connect with current open problems and other researchers’ interests.

Outside of Work

When Dr. Sizikova isn’t researching, mentoring, and writing reports or grant applications, she enjoys skiing and long-distance running.
